Shug's significance to Celie plays a pivotal position in the book ‘The Color Purple. Through Walker's usage of language, we understand the importance of this value, which really helps to develop Celie's character during and is already prominent in letter 22. Firstly, we understand that Shug's arrival excites Celie a lot and she gets ecstatic that Shug perhaps there is to be taken care of. Celie uses a metaphor to clarify ‘I think my heart gon take flight out my mouth' when she sees Shug's ft . alone, exposing how fast her cardiovascular is beating and how much influence Shug has more than Celie just before we have actually seen her face. Celie even desires to ‘cry' and ‘shout' to welcome Shug however all of us realise that Celie thinks it is not her place to speak and the lady ‘don't declare nothing', which will shows that Celie has become accustomed to not voicing her views. Additionally Celie pays close attention to what Shug has on from the ‘chickinhawk feathers' to the ‘snakeskin bag' which she describes ‘match her shoes' showing Celie's eye intended for detail. This close observation could represent how fascinated Celie through Shug and might suggest that Celie has been staring and frequently looking up and down for Shug in fascination in order to take in every part of her appearance.
